Final Pieces

My motivation as an artist has always been life. My motivation comes from everything from nature’s patterns to current political issues. All of my ideas come from looking around and observing what’s happening around me and how that is affecting me. What motivated me to create my new series was the new law that passed in Arizona that is if you get stop by an officer for some reason and if he thinks you’re an illegal or undocumented immigrant then he has the right to check your proof of citizenship. If you don’t have proof of being a citizen in the United States, then he can detain until you can prove that you are a citizen. But my question is how illegal or undocumented immigrants are supposed to look? In my series, there will be 6 portraits and for the audience to guess who is Latino or not. This series shows how you really can’t tell who’s Latino or not by the way they look and that Arizona is basically racial profiling, which is illegal.
I started off by looking at myself in the mirror, wondering how I see myself as an artist. Trying to figure out how to combine my culture and my political views into one to make a series of art work that has a powerful/meaningful statement. I looked in the mirror and saw how in reality I’m Dominican but when people first see e, they guess that I’m Indian or Native American by the way I look. Many people thinks that I’m Indian or Native American because of my skin complexion, my hair and how my face structure. So I started think “Hey”, I’m perfect for one of the portraits. I started with myself and painted the self portrait. In my self-Portrait I capture that Indian/Native American look so that the viewer can see that you can’t tell whose Latino or not by the way they look. As an artist I learned a lot out of the creation of the self portrait. I explored my color pallet and also how to capture a person look.
My Second piece is another portrait of a person who I think is another great example for my series. Her name is Tiziana and she is Dominican/Italian. The first day I meet her, I never thought that she would be Latino. She has a European look and has no typical “Latino” look. She has nice, long golden hair that complements her skin-tone. She not a typical “Hispanic” in looks, but if you get to know her, you’ll notice that she Hispanic. During painting the portrait, I explore my color pallet by mixing different colors to match her skin-tone. Also I figure out a composition that would capture her personality. As an artist I learned many things from painting this portrait, like about proportion and how that’s important in capturing a person’s look.

Blog 6

Beside from my self Portrait, I'm working own another piece that I mention on blog 5. I'm currently paint a portrait of my friend Tizzy. I Started to look through some of Tizzy's pictures and grab one that had a interesting composition that fits my theme. I Started to sketch it out and i gave her a base tone. I'm going to start refining her proportion and using the new techniques from the last self portrait.

I'm currently still working on my first piece. I figured out how to mix the right colors for my skin tone. Right now I'm currently checking on my proportions and getting everything to line up correctly. I have learned so much about painting from the last few weeks. From mixing colors to painting technique. I have grown so much and I'm proud of myself for not giving up.

I'm stilling working on my piece. I'm currently still working on getting the skin tone just right. I'm exploring with colors and trying to make a variety of colors in my pallet. My theme is still the same, how you can tell when someone an immigrant by the way they look. I'm also currently working on my second piece which is a portrait about my friend Tizzy. Shes a mix of Dominican and Italian. She's perfect for my piece because she doesn't look Latino but she is. That is what I'm currently doing for my series of painting.

blog 4

I have been working on my self portrait piece for like a week now and so far it’s been going good but I still having troubles with mixing the skin tones. I have been trying different mixes and still haven't found the right mix. I have the shapes of my face down. I’m still sticking to my original theme. I feel very strong about the theme and about how I’m going to show my theme.

RISD TOUR

Before I took the tour I thought that the school was going to be a very strict school and everybody who went there was going to be stuck up. After I took the tour and saw what really goes down at RISD I was very surprise, my whole vision of RISD was changed. RISD is more alike BAA. All of the students there was serious about what they study and at the same time very friendly and fun to hang around. The teacher at RISD was also like BAA teacher, they was so down to earth and really connected to the students. The pro of this school is the environment, I just loved it. Also the students and Teachers were great too. The Cons of this school is that mostly everything is up on a hill. You have to walk up and down hills and stairs to get to class. Also another con is that they don’t focus on what I want. I can see myself going to RISD as an ID major but not as an Architect which is what I want to study. RISD is a great school but maybe not for me...

preparation to create your first portfolio piece

So for my first piece I'm going to do a self portrait. i started off with a few fast sketches first then grab a mirror and a board. I map out my basic face. Now I'm going to start painting a basic color and just mapping out where my shadows are on my face..

My process took long but i feel that i have a strong theme that i would like to explore more and that i have very strong feeling for. In my first piece/pieces talks about hispanic and how people always thinks they are immigrants in the United States by the way they look and dress, which for me is wrong and a real issue that bothers me. I spend countlies hours searching about that isuue and reading about how people react from that.

Senior Year

My vision for senior year work in my art class is to create a couple of art work that reflects where I want to go in life. To build off what I have learned from the last two years and have art works that show what I am really capable of. I want to explore more in all classes that BAA has to offer in the visual arts department. Also I want to explore and create new pieces with paint. I want to have a nice foundation that can support me when I go to college. So that I can be ready for whatever college throws at me. That is my vision for my senior year work in my arts class.

Where have you been as an artist? Where are you going?

In this assignment I painted a time line where it shows from how I started to how I want to finish. I started off finger painting and I want to end up painting/drawing very detail/meaningful pieces of art. From painting on a canvas to designing a house. That where I want to see myself in the future.
I remember when I first got interested in the arts. I was little and I always loved to finger paint, it was messy and fun to do. Then as time progress I started to pick up a pencil and draw simple shapes. That why I painted a "finger Painting" piece first. After a while I started to get better and better. That the middle hand where you can see it’s not perfect. There’s still some work that I can do. That how I feel right now, that I need to keep practicing. Then the last hand shows where I see myself in the future. I want to be a very skillful in the arts. I want to paint/draw realistic figure. I want my art to be very detailed and that every single mark has its reasons. That where I want to be as an artist.

Q&A

1. Why bracelet on the last hand?

The yellow bracelet represents where I'm from. The yellow bracelet represents the Dominican republic. I only have it on the last hand because I feel that I still have a lots to learn about me and and the island that i grew up to love. That's why in the future I want to say that I'm a true Dominican who understand the ways of the island and the history of how it became to be.

2. Why paint finger paint W/out finger painting?

I was trying to paint a kids hands not mines because the finger paint represents me as a child not as a teen.

3. Why pencils? Don't you want to be a painter?

I choosed pencils because my goal is to be an architect and yes I want to be a painter. I want to do both.
