Where have you been as an artist? Where are you going?

In this assignment I painted a time line where it shows from how I started to how I want to finish. I started off finger painting and I want to end up painting/drawing very detail/meaningful pieces of art. From painting on a canvas to designing a house. That where I want to see myself in the future.
I remember when I first got interested in the arts. I was little and I always loved to finger paint, it was messy and fun to do. Then as time progress I started to pick up a pencil and draw simple shapes. That why I painted a "finger Painting" piece first. After a while I started to get better and better. That the middle hand where you can see it’s not perfect. There’s still some work that I can do. That how I feel right now, that I need to keep practicing. Then the last hand shows where I see myself in the future. I want to be a very skillful in the arts. I want to paint/draw realistic figure. I want my art to be very detailed and that every single mark has its reasons. That where I want to be as an artist.

Q&A

1. Why bracelet on the last hand?

The yellow bracelet represents where I'm from. The yellow bracelet represents the Dominican republic. I only have it on the last hand because I feel that I still have a lots to learn about me and and the island that i grew up to love. That's why in the future I want to say that I'm a true Dominican who understand the ways of the island and the history of how it became to be.

2. Why paint finger paint W/out finger painting?

I was trying to paint a kids hands not mines because the finger paint represents me as a child not as a teen.

3. Why pencils? Don't you want to be a painter?

I choosed pencils because my goal is to be an architect and yes I want to be a painter. I want to do both.

  1. Josh, in your piece I appreciate how you portrayed how you've grown as an artist through your skill in drawing your own hand. This metaphor is so layered in its meanings about your journey, your shifting goals and your developing identity.

I wonder about the background. The foreground seems so thoughtful, so I would like to know your thinking behind the background and how it relates to your message.
